Analysis of the match between Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon
Ivory Coast enjoyed a smooth start to AFCON 2025, edging past Mozambique 1-0 in their opening match. The only goal was scored by Amad Diallo, the attacking star currently playing in the Premier League for Manchester United, securing all three points.
Under head coach Emerse Fae, Ivory Coast continue to display a disciplined, possession-based style that previously guided them to the AFCON 2023 title. Against Mozambique, their defense once again proved solid, keeping a clean sheet and allowing very few clear chances. In midfield, Franck Kessie and Ibrahim Sangare were highly effective, controlling the tempo for most of the game.
The victory extended Ivory Coast’s impressive run in official matches. In their last six outings, they have recorded four wins, one draw and only one defeat, scoring 13 goals while conceding just once.
As reigning African champions, Ivory Coast are aiming to become the first team since Egypt in 2010 to successfully defend the AFCON title. The clash with Cameroon is considered their toughest remaining test in Group F and could be decisive in determining the group winner.
Historically, meetings between Ivory Coast and Cameroon have been closely contested. Ivory Coast hold a slight edge with 10 wins, 2 draws and 9 losses in 21 encounters. However, while the head-to-head record is balanced, Cameroon’s recent form has been less convincing. Their 1-0 win over Gabon was only their third victory in the last six matches, making a slip-up against Ivory Coast far from surprising.
